I remembered what my mother instilled in me—“Dream bigger than you ever intended to be.” I became determined to shatter these assumptions and prove them all wrong. I didn’t want to let the boxes people tried to put me in to limit my growth. But most of all, I wanted to prove to myself what kind of growth was even possible for my life. I started volunteering with women who were working to get themselves and their families out of poverty. To this day, it is one of the most rewarding things I do. As a mentor, I realized that I love helping people not only see what they are able to accomplish, but also have those accomplishments impact and change their lives in positive, successful ways. After I had been mentoring for a little more than a year, a family member (who happened to be a corporate coach) suggested that I look into getting certified in the coaching field myself. As I started following the next steps to get my coaching certification through iPEC (Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching), everything fell into place so easily and effortlessly. That’s when I was convinced that I was following my calling going into coaching. In less than a year, I landed paying clients and had started my own business. In less than two years, I was leading workshops, leadership development classes, and serving as the keynote speaker for large companies, while maintaining a steady flow of one-on-one clients. I was very fortunate to have been raised by a remarkably smart and strong single mom who taught me that I could do anything and be anything. That I was more capable than even I knew. She taught me to fight for what I wanted, to work hard, and to never stop chasing my dreams. After pursuing a marketing degree in college, I met my amazing husband, moved to Minnesota together, and have been raising our four boys for the last 18 years. I made the intentional choice of being a stay-at-home mom. Being with the boys everyday is something we were blessed enough to make happen and I will never regret a single second I spent with them. However, during this time a big challenge showed up for me. When our youngest started kindergarten, I was asked countless times by friends and family if I was going to get a “real job.” This question would always make me cringe. What they didn’t realize was that I still had a “real job”—I was still a totally devoted, committed mother. This is when I discovered how many assumptions people tend to make about stay-at-home moms (for example, that we’re not smart or capable, that we don’t go to college, or that we happen to be wealthy.)
